Location: SATAZIUS, a long-abandoned planet.The cruiser Agano was on patrol when it was attacked and stricken by a confederacy of space pirates that had established a base on SATAZIUS. For an indie side-scrolling shmup, it's pretty well-done. It's not really innovative at all (it's essentially Gradius), but the levels are memorable, the weapons make sense and offer variety and strategy, and the game isn't a pure memorizer (where the only way to win is to memorize your ship movements down to the pixel, like R-Type and its ilk).The difficulty isn't that bad either; a mid-level shmup player might be able to beat this in a weekend with a bit of work. It's neither too easy (like many games from people who haven't played arcade shmups and add things like health bars and leveling up) nor too punishing (like many games from people who have only played arcade shmups and expect you to spend hours to deduce The One True Path through the game to finish it). It's just a solid, old-school horizontal shooter.Alright, now on to the complaints: the game has only one resolution and it'll resize all the windows on your desktop to that tiny size when you quit and the ESC key immediately bombs out to the desktop without any prompt (which is annoying if your muscle memory is to hit ESC to pause like most PC games).This game needs a graphics and UI update badly, but it's worth picking up for the classic shmup player who has some time to kill.. Satazius is a side scrolling shmup in the style of Gradius and R-Type. So it has a level design unlike most shmups these days. The weapon system where you have a your primary weapon and two secondary weapons. The secondary weapons you can switch during the game. You shoot both the primary and the secondary weapon at the same time. So you got quite some fire power. But the game is designed around it. You also got a special weapon that you need to charge. And you can collect upgrades for your weapons. The controls are good and there is controller support. The artstyle looks good although it's a bit generic. One thing I didn't like is that the game has a very low resolution. But you can play it full screen or windowed. The music also doesn't do it for me. But if you are looking for a shmup Satazius is a great pick.. Short game but awesome gameplay. I miss games like this. took me 2h to defeat all bosses on normal.. This is a really awesome side scrolling space ship shoot in the fashion of R-type and Gradius and Lifeforce. Don't my let my lack of minutes fool you i played mostly when with my friends list off when i didn't wanna be bothered. This game is hard and I mean classically hard if you arent famailar with this style of gameplay you will have a rough go of it. To get the best expernice out of this game it should be played with a controller like a SNES or Sega Saturn gamepad. Xbox 360 controllers need not apply.. Do you like old horizantal NES and SNES shooters? If so, BUY IT ALREADY!. Those familiar with the term "Nintendo Hard" will feel right at home with this madness right here. It's loads of fun and definitely anger inducing, like GEEZ... I wouldn't suggest being around mixed company when playing this as it will cause you to fill the room with that foul language. It's a mix of the old gradius vibe with some of that mindbreaking "bullet hell" that everyone loves.That aside, the graphics are really good. Think a step above SNES, with sprites that stand out and sound effects that keep your attention. I don't really enjoy the soundtrack too much, but the option to turn it down is available. My only major major gripe is the inability to actually pause the game with the start button on my Xbox 360 USB controller. It requires me to press Q instead and while it might not be a huge deal for some, a shooter like this is kind of hard enough to survive without having to reach over to press Q when I could easily press the START button. All in all, it's a fun game that comes cheap (and even cheaper with a steam sale) and for 4 insanely hard levels, it's not bad at all. I definitely recommend this welcome distraction.. I was looking through some random forums for decent old school space ship shooters on Steam, and Satazius was mentioned "A LOT", I thought "Satazius huh? Kinda sounds like Gradius, I'll give it a whirl".... And my god, if sounding like Gradius is one thing, looking and playing like Gradius is another.Satazius is an exceptional game that has CAPCOM's seal of approval, and it's one of the better inde shooters I've played. Basically take Gradius, and take away all of it's medication, force feed it a diet of protein shakes and suffering, then you'll have something that doesn't even come close to Satazius, this game is hard as hell!!! The beautiful thing about Satazius is that the similarities are all there, but it's not a shameless rip-off. For a starts it's way harder, and it's a lot prettier.I find it difficult to write about shooters like this, well because they're pretty much the same. But the moral of the story here is "Why fix what is not ultimately broken." If CAPCOM put its stamp on it, then it's got to be good right? That's Satazius, an old school side scrolling space shooter, that get's everything right, no complaints from me. Take it from someone who plays these games non-stop.... And seriously... Good luck with this one, it's well hard!
